Can you tell me about your job at Corle Building Systems?

Q&A with Kevin Ziance, Controller, Corle Building System

Kevin Ziance has always been gifted with numbers. Over the years, his job titles have been treasurer, accountant, controller, and—wait for it—deputy assistant treasurer for financial services. “My boss was a retired three-star general,” Kevin says with a laugh. “He liked titles.”

But what Kevin likes best of all is when his numbers job blends with manufacturing. “I love seeing raw materials turn into tangible goods,” he says. Here’s how he found that perfect mix in a place that he calls a perfect spot to live, work, and play.

I am the controller for Corle Building Systems. I have been here for 12 years. Before coming to Corle, I worked as an accountant, treasurer, and controller for a variety of companies, including General Electric, Coleman Camping Trailers, and a company in Washington, D.C.

When Coleman Camping Trailers closed its doors, I realized that I had really come to love working in manufacturing. I love seeing raw materials turn into tangible goods.

Corle’s work in manufacturing definitely attracted me to this job. I will stay here until I retire.

What makes your career interesting and worthwhile?

I have always had an interest in accounting and finance, and I enjoy working with people. Manufacturing offers the best of both worlds: working with people, and a large variety in daily work. I really enjoy working for something that has a tangible product at the end of the day—you can’t replace that.

What makes Bedford County and the Southern Alleghenies a great place to live and work?

I’ve never been a big-city guy. What I like about this area is that you can live in the suburbs, and still have access to Pittsburgh, the sports, theatre — whatever your thing is. Yet, you can live in affordable housing, and raise a family.

When I lived in Washington, D.C., it felt so transient. Every weekend, there was a U-Haul in our townhouse complex. Someone was moving in or out. Growing up in western Pennsylvania, most of the kids in my kindergarten class were also in my graduating class. It was stable, and that’s what I wanted for my own family. It was fun to be in DC, but I wanted stability for my family and lifelong friends.

In Bedford County, there are excellent recreation opportunities. There is boating, mountain biking, skiing, watersports, kayaking, and rails-to-trails. It’s not limited to one area or era: there is architecture and history. Bedford Springs is a gem, and downtown Bedford looks like it belongs in a Hallmark movie.

What do you think students should know about a career in manufacturing?

Manufacturing offers family-sustaining wages and it provides gratification to put your name on something you build.

My path led to my career by education, but on-the-job training is so crucial. High school, trade school, college—make it what you want it. You’ll have the tools. Companies want to know about your successes and what you’ve done in your career more than your education.
