Q&A with Shane Hendershot, Senior Project Manager, BC Stone

Shane Hendershot took know-how from Bedford County Technical Center to move into manufacturing at BC Stone — a rewarding career that advanced with roles in fabrication, installation, and management. And he gets to do it all in a place that he says has “great small-town life, four seasons and beautiful mountains.”

Can you tell me about your career?

I graduated from Everett High School and was in the auto/diesel program at Bedford County Technical Center. After graduation, I briefly worked at another company before starting at BC Stone. When I came here, I learned about the stone industry with on-the-job training.

My first job at the company was making steel slab carts that one of the owners patented. After that, I moved into the fabrication shop (at this time most everything was done by hand). We were a small shop at that time, and we would go out to the job site to template and install the countertops. Today, I am a senior project manager and office manager at BC Stone. The company has grown in the years since I’ve been here: now we have dedicated templaters, fabricators, installers, a CAD department, and machine operators. We have robots that use a saw and waterjet for cutting and c-n-c edging machines.

What makes your career interesting and worthwhile?

It is always rewarding to see a kitchen countertop, vanity countertop, or fireplace finished from the slab of material received. There is a lot of teamwork that goes into the process. Problem-solving and improving efficiency as tools and technology advance are also rewarding aspects of manufacturing.

What makes Bedford County a great place to live and work?

Living and working in Bedford County is great! We have small-town life and it takes two hours or less to get to bigger cities. I love the mountains. It’s nice to have four seasons of weather and we have limited natural disasters.

What should new grads know about manufacturing?

Manufacturing can be very rewarding. It brings a sense of accomplishment, and it utilizes skills from marketing and designing, hand skills, machine operation, to problem-solving. It takes a team of hardworking, skilled employees to turn a raw material into a valuable finished product. Manufacturing involves many areas of skilled labor and allows opportunities for advancement.
