Nathan Claycomb, Engineering & Drafting Manager, Corle Building Systems

Before Nathan Claycomb started working as an engineer at Corle Building Systems, he wore many hats, from restaurant worker to bellhop. Today, Nathan is the Engineering & Drafting Manager — a role that he says helps him to create an environment for success. Here’s how he moved up the career ladder to find a job, a company, and a location where he thrives.

Can you tell me about your career journey?

I am currently the Engineering & Drafting Manager at Corle Building Systems. I started in 2006 working in the shop for a summer before moving into quoting and estimating. I also worked as an engineering intern throughout college before I took a full-time position as an entry-level engineer after graduation.

What’s your background?

I received a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Penn State University. In addition to my positions at Corle Building Systems, I worked in the restaurant industry, at the help desk of campus computer labs, and as a valet and bellhop at the Omni Bedford Springs.

What do you like best about your role?

Every day provides an opportunity to learn something new or presents a new challenge to solve. As an engineer, each project has its own set of variables to work out so that the customer gets the end product they want. As a manager, I take pride in creating an environment where my team can succeed.

What makes Bedford County a great place to live and work?

The area has plenty of recreational activities available; hiking, bike trails, rafting, kayaking, skiing, etc. There are many small towns and rural areas to live in if you are looking for a slower pace of life and a sense of calmness in this chaotic world.aly

What do you think young people should know about a career in manufacturing?

There are a lot of opportunities in various career fields in the manufacturing sector. Manufacturing businesses are supported by engineers, chemists, human resources, marketing, and accountants in addition to the individuals who work in direct manufacturing processes.

For someone willing to put in the effort to learn and excel in their position, there are always opportunities to grow in their career field.
